People's health is the foundation of social and cultural progress and an important symbol of national prosperity and strength. Integrating Chinese and Western medicine is one of the guiding principles of health and healthcare work in the new era in China, and it is also a prominent feature and unique advantage of China's medical and healthcare undertakings.
Ear, nose, throat, head and neck diseases encompass the most important and common groups of diseases that harm human health, including hearing impairment, allergic rhinitis, pharyngitis, and tinnitus—widespread chronic and difficult-to-treat health problems. In-depth research on the pathophysiological mechanisms of these diseases is of great significance for improving the level of diagnosis and treatment and enhancing patients' quality of life. Recently, the 2024 Annual Academic Conference and the Second Academic Annual Meeting of the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology, hosted by the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology and co-hosted by Beijing Chaoyang Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University and Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital of TCM, was held in Beijing. It is reported that the conference lasted for three days, focusing on the latest research and treatment advances in the field of ear, nose and throat diseases. The event featured rich content, a strong academic atmosphere, and presented a wonderful and thought-provoking intellectual feast for the attendees.
Guests attending the conference included Li Ping, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology; Liu Jinmin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital of TCM; Li Haichao, President of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University; Wang Chengshuo, Vice President of Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University; Xu Xianfa, Vice President of Beijing Civil Aviation General Hospital; Huang Chunlei, Vice President of Beijing Tsinghua University Affiliated Chuanyangliu Hospital; Kong Lingzhi, Vice President of the Rehabilitation College of Beijing Language and Culture University; Wang Ningyu, Honorary Chairman of the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology and Vice President of the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Science Academy of Capital Medical University; Liu Daxin, Honorary Chairman of the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology, Honorary Chairman of the Otolaryngology Branch of the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and National-level Famous Old Chinese Medicine Practitioner; and Liu Jianhua, Chairman of the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology. The conference brought together more than 100 experts and scholars from over 20 provinces and cities across China, including Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, Guangdong, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan, Hebei, and Heilongjiang. They gathered together to exchange ideas and discuss the development of the discipline and advances in disease diagnosis and treatment. At the conference, experts shared their clinical experience, academic insights, and research findings from a cutting-edge perspective. They conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on topics such as the latest research progress in this field, clinical practice experience, pathophysiological mechanisms, ear, nose, and throat surgery and TCM techniques, and discussions and sharing of difficult cases, promoting the development of the otolaryngology discipline. The opening ceremony of the conference was co-hosted by Yan Zhanfeng, Vice President of Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital of TCM, and Liu Jinfeng, Administrative Vice Director of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University.

In his address, Liu Jinmin briefly introduced Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital of TCM and its otolaryngology department. He stated that, as an affiliated hospital of a national 'Double First-Class' university, Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital of TCM has always adhered to a global perspective in its operations, basing itself in the capital, radiating nationwide, and looking to the world, taking the mission of serving human health, and forming a large medical circle of Dongzhimen Hospital that transcends time and space. Facing the new era, the hospital has creatively constructed a strategic layout of "two zones and one department," forming a booming development trend that integrates the inheritance of humanistic traditions, the dissemination of medical frontiers, and the dissemination of the essence of Chinese culture.
In addition, he introduced that the hospital's otolaryngology department (TCM Ear, Nose, and Throat Head and Neck Center) has unified management of its two outpatient and inpatient departments in the Dongcheng and Tongzhou districts, as well as its international special outpatient department, providing homogenized services. The department has an annual outpatient volume of over 100,000 and performs over 1,000 surgeries, with medical radiation reaching across the country. Through "internal cultivation of the fundamentals, strengthening TCM characteristics; external cultivation of new skills, developing new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies," it has gradually formed a specialty with comprehensive advantages, focusing on TCM, integrating Chinese and Western medicine, and primarily using internal treatment combined with both internal and external treatments.
Otolaryngology-head and neck diseases, as an important area affecting human health, have always received considerable attention in research and development. In her address, Li Ping highlighted the achievements of the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology over the past year. She expressed her hope that the committee would further strengthen cooperation and exchanges with domestic and international academic communities, build a broader platform for academic exchange, encourage innovative thinking and interdisciplinary cooperation, and jointly address challenges in the field of otolaryngology-head and neck diseases.

At the meeting, Li Haichao said in his address that the opening of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital's Chaoyang and Changying campuses has significantly improved the hospital's overall level and enhanced its ability to provide health services to residents in the surrounding area.
It is understood that the hospital attaches importance to the development of each discipline and, while expanding the scale of its services, also focuses on improving service quality. Li Haichao stated that he hopes that academic exchanges in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery will enhance the construction of the discipline's connotation, further promoting in-depth academic exchanges, improving the quality of department services, and truly strengthening the treatment of the pathophysiological mechanisms of otolaryngology-head and neck surgical diseases. Through understanding and exploration, further improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment levels of diseases.
At the meeting, Liu Jianhua stated that since its establishment, the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology has always adhered to the tenet of "promoting academic exchanges and advancing disciplinary development," and is committed to scientific research and clinical exploration in the field of otolaryngology-head and neck diseases. In the past year, the committee has not only held academic salons and seminars in Tianjin, Hebei, Xiamen, Luoyang, Inner Mongolia and other places, but also actively promoted the application of the integration of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in the treatment of otolaryngology-head and neck diseases, strengthened the connection between basic research and clinical practice, and promoted the transformation of clinical and scientific research achievements. It attaches importance to the construction of disciplinary connotation and promotes standardized construction. In addition, the committee has established an integrated platform for big data on AI in otolaryngology prevention and treatment in 13 hospitals, forming an innovative application demonstration of medical big data. She added that with the continuous advancement of medical technology and the growing needs of patients, the future will require continuous exploration of new treatment methods and technologies to provide patients with more personalized and precise medical services.
Professor Wang Ningyu gave a keynote report entitled "Otolaryngology and Audiology", distinguishing between hearing and audition, reviewing historical research, and emphasizing the importance of auditory research, the necessity of systematic evaluation, and future development trends. Professor Liu Daxin gave a keynote report entitled "The Relationship Between the Pathological Characteristics of Allergic Rhinitis and Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndromes", discussing the understanding of allergic reactions in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the pathological changes of allergic rhinitis and Traditional Chinese Medicine syndromes, and the relationship between allergic rhinitis and overall health. He stated that Traditional Chinese Medicine has had a unique understanding of allergic reactions since ancient times, although modern terminology was not used, there was relevant practice. Allergic rhinitis is not just a nasal disease, but a systemic disease. Traditional Chinese Medicine differentiates allergic rhinitis into different syndromes, such as lung qi deficiency and spleen qi deficiency, which are related to abnormal immune responses. In addition, he also provided guidance from his personal clinical experience, including dietary conditioning, emotional regulation, and standardized medication. Huang Chunlei, vice president of Tsinghua University Affiliated Dayanliu Hospital, interpreted the "Chinese Expert Consensus on Stepwise Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis in Children". He stated that the principles of treatment for allergic rhinitis in children include: medical prevention combination, four-in-one approach, and stepwise treatment. He explained the relevant knowledge of stepwise treatment of allergic rhinitis in children in detail, starting from aspects such as how often to conduct efficacy evaluation and how to judge whether the condition is under control.
In addition, during the academic discussion session, many experts and scholars, including Yan Zhanfeng, vice president of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Dongzhimen Hospital, and Meng Lingzhao, vice director of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Capital Medical University Affiliated Tian Tan Hospital, gave academic presentations on topics such as "Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Differentiation of Nasal Diseases" and "Anatomy and Surgical Approaches of Parapharyngeal Space".
It is understood that since its establishment, the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Diseases Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology has adhered to the tenet of "promoting academic exchanges, promoting disciplinary development, and serving clinical practice", and has been committed to promoting academic exchanges and cooperation in this field, promoting the transformation and application of scientific research achievements, and making positive contributions to the research and treatment of otolaryngology diseases in China.
The development of otolaryngology is an important platform for the coordinated development of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. This academic annual meeting brought together many top domestic and international talents. Junior experts from the basic to the clinical level in the field of otolaryngology diseases. Focusing on the latest research progress, clinical practice experience, and pathophysiological mechanisms in this field. This meeting provided a high-level academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in the field of gastrointestinal diseases and related diseases to reach a consensus, exchange experiences, and promote cooperation, improving the influence of the discipline, and promoting the medical and health cause in the field of otolaryngology to new heights, contributing to the construction of a healthy China.
